Tomac’s 7th place finish in the first moto is a direct result of his bad start because his lap times prove he was the most recovered and most prepared. What I am alluding to though is that the lap times point to is who trained the smartest during the week. I sure as hell couldn’t do it and am in no way taking any credit from these guys. These results in no way indicate ANY of their fitness levels, as any racer riding in that heat WILL struggle no matter how fit they are. Adam Cianciarulo, who has been dominant all season struggled to keep that winning momentum going, Ken Roczen fell back to 10th place in the 450s, and Chase Sexton couldn’t finish the second 250 moto. Now, I know you’re probably thinking, “But Marvin got the overall.” Yes, he did, but his lap times (explained below) indicate extreme fatigue and exhaustion as did Justin Cooper’s. In Moto 2, Tomac dominated with his first place finish, yet he spends his time training in the moderate temperatures of Colorado? So why did he have such a great result in the hottest and roughest moto of the day? It comes down to the simple fact that he probably had the best week of training and the most energy in his body to utilize in the race. Working out every day and riding insanely fast motos in the heat may be fitness, but that doesn’t make it healthy.Įli Tomac is the prime example of what I mean. Overtraining is a very dangerous part of this sport and when racers become so absorbed in results, it is quite common for them to lose track of their health. What I witnessed this weekend has led me to believe that some of these racers did not provide optimal recovery time for themselves and therefore were already fried come race day. Where a typical week may look like 3 training days (two 30 minute motos, cycling, and working out,) press day, and race day, when preparing for a hot race weekend, that schedule should be drastically cut back. As hard as their training is, when it comes to body recovery in the heat, it takes much longer to recoup after hot motos. Many of the racers who saw extreme push back in their results this weekend were putting down hard Motos in the heat in the prior days leading up to the race. When preparing for an extremely hot race such as last weekend’s, it is important to actually back off of your training a bit the week prior and focus on staying recovered and hydrated. This does not reflect their physical ability, but what they had been doing the week prior to the race to cause them to see the results that they did.
